The Year 2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this rise, I undertook a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming seems uniquely powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.

Several the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year so far.

When these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
