MTG Releases 4 Commander Staples with Play-Doh Artwork
Magic: The Gathering has revealed its yearly partnership with the Extra Life charity, a fundraising program supporting children's hospitals. This year's initiative features a new Secret Lair drop titled Squishful Thinking, which presents four highly sought-after Commander format cards with adorable art based on the classic Play-Doh modeling compound.
Meet the Reprinted Commanders
Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer first appeared in a Commander deck and is a popular choice in land-based and mana acceleration strategies due to its ability to generate Badger tokens. Polyraptor made its debut in the prehistoric set Ixalan block and is played not only in creature-type decks but also in synergy-focused strategies that take advantage of its duplication ability. Wurmcoil Engine and Academy Manufactor are both frequently seen in Commander decks—the former for being a classic colorless value creature, and the latter for its synergy capabilities.
Affordability and Charity Support
None of these cards are particularly expensive (assuming you no longer gasp at a $15 Magic card), but these are appreciated reprints even for those not drawn to the colorful art. Each card features the ability to produce tokens, reflecting the creativity that Play-Doh has encouraged in multiple eras of young fans. Wizards will additionally back the charity through a fundraising livestream on Twitch on Nov. 8, running from morning to 10:30 p.m. PT.
Release Details and Pricing
The Squishful Thinking Secret Lair drop will be available via the official website from September 29 to November 9 and will be produced based on orders—a notable shift from previous restricted releases. Moreover, a small number will be sold at the MagicCon: Atlanta merchandise booth from Sept. 26–28. The standard set is priced at $39.99, and the premium version at $49.99. Fifty percent of the proceeds will support Extra Life and Seattle Children's Hospital.
