Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Squad to Face India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from the three-match ODI series facing India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a shock call-up.

Performance Issues Lead to Omission

The right-hander was left out from the one-day international squad after scoring just one run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64, but will now work towards a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates

Recent performances suggest of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia search for a solution to their batting top-order problems.

Pace Additions and Injury News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since excelling for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue by the time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule

Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
