Life in the Sights of Beijing’s Missile Dubbed Guam Killer Ballistic Systems

Similar to numerous locals of Guam, one resident is accustomed to hearing about potential threats from China. Regardless of growing tensions in the Western Pacific, numerous Guamanians are more focused on daily expenses instead of military aggression.

She says that her main concern is covering expenses, and she maintains confidence in the federal leadership to ensure her security.

Yet that feeling of safety was shaken this month when news emerged of a significant military parade in China, where new weaponry was unveiled—featuring a missile dubbed the Guam-targeting missile by state press.

Additionally, the sight of Xi Jinping together with the leaders of Russia, Pyongyang, Iran and allied states indicated a new strategic partnership that some see as a serious threat.

“Based on reports, almost everyone in this region should be alarmed,” comments one Guamanian, in his seventies, who lives near the command center of the Guam national guard.

“But we have not much we can do.”

Located roughly 3,000km from China, the island serves as a critical military outpost for the American forces in the Asia-Pacific region and contains a major armed contingent. Analysts suggest that should China move to annex Taiwan, the US territory would likely become a key battleground in any resulting war.

For this reason, exhibitions of China’s advancing defense prowess—including long-range missiles, anti-drone technology and autonomous units—are taken seriously across the island.

“The island is a essential strategic location for the US in the Western Pacific,” states a official representative for the Joint Task Force-Micronesia.

The representative notes that the zone is among the most ‘consequential’ for national defense and that armed services are “ready to secure the nation here on Guam.”

Therefore, the American government is constructing an upgraded protection system said to offer 360-degree protection for the territory. Based on a newly published record, the $1.5bn initiative is scheduled to be finished within the next ten years.

“Guam should be informed of the threat, while not overly concerned,” comments a former military official, adding that China’s armed services have outpaced the United States in certain capabilities.

“If China select their moment and locations carefully… they could greatly impact defense operations,” the analyst adds.

However, the commentator believes that the American forces continues to be capable and able to counter the PRC’s advanced defense systems.

As well as the missiles, the image of the president positioned with the heads of Pyongyang and Russia at the parade raised new anxiety among several in Guam.

Gina T Reilly says that she previously had no fears about Chinese intentions—prior to the “group photo” of Russia’s president, North Korea’s leader and China’s president. That, she notes, signals “stronger alliances and cooperation” among the countries.

“This can reshape international relations and make coordinated actions more feasible. It’s concerning because it may signal a defense alliance,” Reilly comments.

Territorial leaders, however, repeatedly assert that defending Guam is of critical significance to the armed services.

Elected official Jesse Lujan, who chairs the government body, notes that the island leadership receives intelligence briefings from US military officials and that the security of the island is taken “with the utmost seriousness.”

“Our role is to stay calm, informed and cooperative, confident that the appropriate systems are operational to guarantee our safety.”
